I think South African football fans just shake their heads these days as they try and work out what they are supposed to make of what is happening with their national team.

Joel Santana has been sent packing and we are right back to where we started with Carlos Alberto Parreira back in charge of Bafana Bafana… Ok let me scratch that – we are back to where we started with coaches but everything else seems to have gone backwards.

The cricket is back!

While the soccer and rugby is all good for a bit of a laugh – even when Bafana Bafana aren’t winning – there is something just lekker (for want of a better word) about cricket season rolling around.

The ICC Champions Trophy kicks off on Tuesday with South Africa taking on Sri Lanka. It is shaping up to a very interesting tournament with Australia busy drubbing the English convincingly and South Africa coming off a long break.

Before I get into the “meat” of this blog I have to tip my hat to President Jacob Zuma for making the effort to come and welcome the victorious Springbok side home.

After that disgraceful show from Julius Malema welcoming back Caster Semenya and the other medal winners, it was pleasant to see a politician who realised he was not the centre of attention.

Would South African sport benefit from a shakeup of its priority sports offerings?

South African sport is largely dominated by three high profile offerings – rugby, cricket and soccer. Collectively these three sports get the lions share of most sponsorship and development money purely because they attract the most fans and therefore can generate the most revenue.
