Walk Haven

Recently a group of my doggie-loving friends all decided to go to give our pets an outing and let them tire themselves out. So, Saturday came and we all made our way in the minimum number of cars possible to the Muldersdrift area, right next to the Cradle of Humankind to a lovely place called Walkhaven.

The place is open 7 days a week, but their restaurant, which is called the Dog House, only serves food on Friday from 2pm onwards but is open on weekends all day. Entrance into this doggie paradise is R25 per adult and R15 per child.

This large property with little benches and tables for the owners to sit at and have little picnics or braais also has a Lapamanzi’s where groups of people can congregate or hire the place for private functions such as birthdays and/or small weddings.

They also have kennels available so if you can’t find someone to look after your best friend when you need to go out of town, contact Walkhaven, or download the form here on their website.

Gay Pride 2011

Gay Pride 2011

It’s that time of year again when the entire lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community people of Gauteng takes to the streets in their annual Gay pride parade. This year it will be held on the 1st of October 2011, at its new residence in Rosebank at Zoo Lake Sports club in Parkview, Johannesburg.

This year’s theme, Born this Gay, probably had something to do with icon Lady Gaga’s, ” Born this way” song that was released on her new album this year. This is in celebration of the movement’s 22 year existence, and the reason for this theme is that we, as gay people, or friends of gay people, will march for the protection of all human rights protected by the South African constitution.

Joburg Day 2011

Joburg Day 2011

Once again Highveld Stereo and Santam are bringing us our yearly dose of South Africa’s finest artists in the Joburg Day Music Fest, happening on Saturday the 3rd of September. This also happens to be the first official weekend of spring, so what better way to bring in the warmth and sunshine we all have missed this winter, than with this awesome showcase!

This time they have made a venue change - obviously to house more fans - so this year Joburg Day is at the Soccer City precinct, FNB Stadium in Orlando, Dobsonville Soweto. They are aiming to make this the biggest and best Joburg Day ever. With bands like Prime Circle, The Parlotones, Liquideep, Lira, Elvis Blue, Freshly Ground, GoodLuck, Locanville, The Vuvuzela and Zebra and Giraffe,  Joburgers are really in for a treat.

I am probably one of not many that have never been to a previous Joburg Day, so I do hope to round up a crowd of interested parties to go make a day of it, and with a line up like that I don’t think I will have much of a problem doing that.

Oppikoppi - Unknown Brother

Oppikoppi - Unknown Brother

It’s that time of year once again, when you have to pack your sleeping bags and tents and get yourselves down to one of South Africa’s biggest rock festivals ever. Where, I  hear you asking? Well, to the Oppikoppi Festival (on the farm near Northam in the Limpopo Province of South Africa.) This great event is brought to us all by Standard Bank, MK, Hilltop Live, Jose Cuervo, Tempo, FHM, Heat, the AA and Ticket Break, which is of course where you can get your tickets for this event.

This year it was announced that Chevelle and Sum 41 would be joining the South African bands on stage, but unfortunately Chevelle had to back out of the concerts  because  recording of their new album is taking longer than expected.  Chevelle have stated that this is just a postponement and that they still intend on coming down to South Africa. Which, to be perfectly honest, I would love to go and see, as they have a  hard rock sound which I believe will be truly amazing if witnessed live.  In  Chevelle’s place will be The Used who will play on the 7th of August 2011 and then move on to Grand West Casino in Cape Town.

Trey Songz

Trey Songz

Tremaine Aldon Neverson (born November 28, 1984) otherwise known as Trey Songz, is a well-known American singer-songwriter, rapper, record producer and actor is coming to South Africa at the end of August 2011. Trey Songz will be playing at the Wave house in Gateway, Durban, and then The Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg on the 27th August. He will be performing songs off his 2010 album “Passion, Pain & Pleasure“, as well as his previous three albums.

This fine young artist is coming to South Africa in celebration of Women’s Month, in August; I hear this concert will be an  outrageously fun, seductive and electrifying experience.  Trey Songz will be hosted by “Me & My Girls”. He will be entertaining us with  famous songs such as “Bottoms up” which he sang with Nicki Minaj, “Say aah”, which is one of my personal favourites, and “Can’t be friends”.

His debut album “I gotta make it” was released on 26 July 2005, and has hits such as Girl Tonight. Then his second album “Trey Day” which was released on 2 October 2007,  features “Can’t help but wait”, which was used to promote the film “Step up 2 the streets” and led him to being nominated for a BET Award for Best Male R & B artist in 2008.

This last Friday, the 24th of June 2011, I went to the Coca -Cola Dome in Northriding,  Johannesburg with my sister and a friend to go and see The Script for my sisters 20th birthday.  It was probably the coldest evening Jozi has seen since last year, with winds howling around us making it very uncomfortable to do anything. But not even the cold weather could keep us away from this talented Irish band, The Script, which is one of my sister’s and my favourite bands.

We arrived at the Coca-Cola Dome and managed to find a parking spot and make our way to the entrance. I was impressed at how quickly we managed to get in. Once we were inside the place was packed with people looking like ants on a picnic blanket.  We decided we would go straight to the bathroom and then from there we would make our way to the golden circle area.

When I heard that Lil Kim, Ciara and Timberland were coming to South Africa and performing together, I was totally amped and informed my friends who enjoy that type of music, and off we went to Computicket to book our tickets. We were extremely worried as we were buying them  a day before the concert.

We were very surprised to be able to still get tickets and we each paid our R500 per ticket. The 3rd of June was the day of the concert, and we created a group for ZARFEST where we could share our excitement, and the whole day we were going on and on about how awesome this was going to be.

Yes, it does seem that South Africa is the place to come on tour and why ever not, right? We are a growing nation and we should also have the world’s best artists coming to see their fan bases here.

And, with that I am proud to say that English Alternative Rock band Coldplay will be coming to South Africa for the first time ever and we have Big Concerts, 94.5 FM, Highveld Stereo and M-net to thank for organising such a feat for us to enjoy.

There will be two performances, starting in Cape Town at the Cape Town stadium on Wednesday the 5th October 2011, and then their second live performance will be at the FNB stadium in Johannesburg on the 8th October 2011. Tickets are ranging from R270 to R635 and as always you can get these tickets from Computicket.

John Cleese

John Cleese

Yes that’s right, you heard me right, John Cleese who came out for the filming of SPUD, is now back, but this time it’s not to make a movie; it’s to bring us some comedic joy.

He is best known for idiosyncratic turns in Monty Python’s Flying Circus and Fawlty Towers. His visit is part of his Alimony Tour brought to you  by Big Concerts.

Where are these shows been done, I hear you asking, as there is guaranteed laughter wherever John Cleese is. Well, he will be at the CTICC Auditorium 1 in Cape Town from the 21st October till the 23rd October and then he will be at Teatro in Monte Casino, Johannesburg from the 25th October to the 29th October. To get more information on availability and prices of the tickets I suggest you visit Computicket to book your tickets.
