Within easy reach of Johannesburg’s city centre are several opportunities to enjoy a walk in nature. The Wilds is one of them, offering a little gem in the midst of the bustling city surrounds.

Designated a conservation area, the park opened to the public in 1938. It was ceded to the City on condition that it remains in its natural state. Its 40 acres are planted with the best of South Africa’s indigenous flora, attracting a myriad of birds. With beautifully laid stone paths, immaculate lawns and delightful ponds and waterfalls.thewildsvygies

Some beautiful examples of Cycads are to be found in the gardens and there’s an abundance of greenery as well as some lovely lawns to relax on. Walking trails provide excellent views over Johannesburg and their “hilly” nature ensures some good exercise for weekend hikers. The trails are laid out on both sides of Houghton Drive and are connected by a footbridge.

Johannesburg City Parks recently spent some R500 000 on fencing the western koppie and repairing the pumps and boreholes that feed the many waterways running on both west and east sides of the ridge, divided by Houghton Drive. New signage has gone up, indicating activities allowed in the park, but also cautioning that walkers enter the park at their own risk.

The Wilds was troubled at times by stories of crime and muggings, as the park offered criminals an easy escape route. City Parks says that the perimeter fencing has ensured those problems have largely disappeared.

In common with inner city parks in major cities around the globe, it is advisable to take normal precautions and to walk in a group around five people.

The Wilds now joins other city conservation parks: Melville Koppies Nature Reserve, Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve, Kloofendal Nature Reserve, Johannesburg Botanic Gardens and Rietfontein Nature Reserve.
