From 5 - 10pm on 26 March 2010 the Charity Angels will be hosting a night market fundraising event at Stoneridge Shopping Centre. The funds raised at the event and for the event will be donated to PUPPY & KITTY Haven, which is an animal shelter that has a no-kill policy. Currently they have about 350 animals in their care looking for homes. The Charity Angels’ goal is two fold; firstly the idea is to raise funds to keep up the great work they do, secondly to find some homes for these animals. If you are looking for love, maybe a little puppy is exactly what you need!

Any potential vendors who may be interested in a stall can hire one at R300 per table. For the event, Stoneridge have catered for children’s entertainment, and the Stoneridge shopping centre is paying for further advertising in the local newspapers and posters. Do your part in the cause. There is plenty available for people to do on the night and with all the surrounding restaurants why not make it a family evening out? Charity Angels look forward to seeing you.

Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, Ruben Ramolefi and Khotso Mokoena will be among a host of track and field stars that will be out to shine when Yellow Pages Series athletics fever draws the crowds to Potchefstroom for the third leg of the series on Thursday, March 4 (17h30 start).

Last Friday in Durban, Mulaudzi took the 1500 metres honours in 3 min 43.88 secs having run over 550 metres of the race on his own upfront. This time the world indoor 800 metres champion will return to his favourite 800 metres distance and will be joined by the unlikely figure of Olympic 3000 metres steeplechase finalist Ruben Ramolefi, who will use the outing in Potchefstroom to work on his speed.

Ramolefi ran superbly in windy conditions in Durban last Friday, to win the 3000 metres steeplechase in 8:25.50.

Mokoena may have had his winning effort of 8.22 metres sidelined by the strong wind, but expect the long jump sensation to be out to delight the crowd in Potchefstroom; the same venue where he qualified for the 2009 World Championship.

Javelin star Robert Oosthuizen, who posted a Commonwealth Games qualifying performance in the opening leg of the Yellow Pages Series in Port Elizabeth, has joined Elizna Naude on the national selectors’ shortlist. Elizna Naude discus effort of 64.49 in Durban has put her in the running for the national team action at the Commonwealth Games later in the year.

Add in LJ van Zyl, who excelled in Durban with a winning time of 49.49 in the 400 metres hurdles, and the stage is set for an evening of top class athletics.

But it’s not all about the goings-on at the stadiums on event night, as Yellow Pages and Athletics SA put that special effort into passing on skills and knowledge to the next generation of athletes during the days leading up to the respective events.

Athletes will be conducted motivational talks at Ba Seobi High School, Boitshoko High School, Tlokwe High School, and Seiphemelo High School in Potchefstroom. These school visits forms part of a build-up programme, which also includes a development clinic to be held on the day prior to the Yellow Pages Series action.

Passing on skills and knowledge to the next generation of athletes

“SA’s top athletes proved at the Durban leg of the Yellow Pages Series that they are on a mission to deliver the type of track and field performances that will draw crowds to the stadiums, and now it’s up to the sports-loving people of our country to come out in great numbers and share in the passion of Yellow Pages Series athletics at its best,” said Lionel Smith, GM: Marketing of Trudon (Publishers Yellow Pages).

“After all, as the athletes say, the larger the crowd, the louder the cheer, the higher their level of adrenalin, the greater the performance.”

With the Yellow Pages male and female Athlete of the meet, each set to collect R15 000, and their points being accumulated throughout the series and the Yellow Pages Senior Track and Field Championships, the top male and female athletes on the points scoreboard at the end of the season will be smiling all the way to the bank with a cheque worth R100 000.

That’s a big incentive, that’s worth going the extra mile, that’s the Yellow Pages Series.

The world-renowned Kruger National Park offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the best in Africa. Established in 1898 to protect the wildlife of the South African Lowveld, it boasts nearly 2 million hectares populated by diverse life forms. It is home to an impressive number of species fused with historical and archaeological sights.

Man’s interaction with the Lowveld environment over many centuries - from bushman rock paintings to majestic archaeological sites like Masorini and Thulamela - is very evident in the Kruger National Park. These treasures represent the cultures, persons and events that played a role in the history of the Kruger National Park and are conserved along with the park’s natural assets. Truly the flagship of the South African national parks, Kruger is home to: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals.

Good news

If you have struggled to get a booking in the Kruger National Park over the long school holidays, good news is in order! South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that some camps will be open for public bookings from Thursday 4 March.

“The new listing will be available for bookings on www.sanparks.org from March 4, but to reduce speculative bookings SANParks will require a 50 percent deposit within 10 days of a booking for a larger group”, stated GM Sales and Marketing, Bheki Zwane, to Tourism Update Online.

SANParks has also announced that camps in the Kruger National Park will change their check-in and check-out times from Thursday, April 1. The check-in time will change from 12pm to 2pm, while the check-out time will be changing from 9am to 10am.

The fun, excitement and spirit of World Cup fever has hit the road! The People’s Bus - a mobile hub of football trivia and fan gear - only has one mission: to delight and inspire bringing the tournament to as many South African communities as possible.

The People’s Bus is due to visit more than 50 locations between now and 11 June, when the long-awaited football spectacular kicks off at Soccer City in Johannesburg. The roadshow will help drum up support for the Football Fridays initiative and inspire confidence in South Africa’s national squad, Bafana Bafana. The idea is to encourage South Africans to be good hosts, fly the flag, sing the national anthem with pride and learn the Diski Dance through dance workshops, music and fun competitions at each stop. Mini football matches and football clinics for schools are also on the agenda.

A journey to remember

The vehicle, a joint initiative between Brand South Africa and MAN Truck and Bus, set off on its nationwide journey on Friday, 19 February. At each stop the public gets a 15-minute bus tour, which offers a thrilling, interactive journey complete with 2010 Fifa World Cup team facts, foosball tables and a mini cinema showing unforgettable moments from previous tournaments. Featuring flooring that resembles a football pitch, passenger seats covered with Bafana Bafana football jerseys and striking artwork inside and out with a distinct South African flavor, it’s an experience many will gladly indulge. Before disembarking, visitors will also get the chance to wish Bafana Bafana the very best of luck for the tournament by slotting messages into a specially designed post box.

Countrywide tour

Brand South Africa and MAN have scheduled bus stops across all nine provinces and their smallest cities and towns, including Dullstroom in Mpumalanga, Upington in the Northern Cape, Bhisho in the Eastern Cape, and Ulundi in KwaZulu-Natal. The bus is also due to make stops at big sporting and cultural events around the country in the run-up to the World Cup - including the Comrades Marathon, the Rand Easter Show and the Cape Town Jazz Festival.

“Taking the People’s Bus into the country areas and smaller towns and cities will enable us to spread the World Cup experience to as many South Africans as possible,” said Brand South Africa Acting CEO Paul Bannister.

MAN has generously donated the customised vehicle - which took 300 of its employees six weeks to convert - as well as a dedicated driver, fuel, insurance and audio-visual equipment for the duration of the roadshow. After the World Cup it will be reconverted into a standard passenger bus.

South Africa’s International Marketing Council (IMC), custodian of Brand South Africa, is sponsoring a first-of-its-kind online ad competition to “crowdsource” creativity and insight from around the world to showcase South Africa as a vibrant and competitive nation brand.

“We’re looking for inspired messaging and out-of-the-box advertising executions that capture and convey the essence, attributes and qualities of Brand South Africa,” said Neale-May, who pointed to the country’s growing tourism, trade and economic development success.

Top entrants will have their work showcased globally to the CMO Council’s 5 000 members, who control more than US$150-billion in annual marketing spend. In addition, winners will be recognized at a special IMC-hosted reception in New York City, the world’s media center and creative hub. They will also win trip packages courtesy of South African Tourism and other travel, hospitality, lodging and merchandise partners in South Africa.

“With the world’s eyes upon it as host of the 2010 Fifa World Cup, South Africa is seeking to establish itself as a competitive and relevant nation brand,” said Paul Bannister, CEO of the International Marketing Council of South Africa. “We’re excited about the potential for social media channels to generate greater discourse and narrative about our brand from people who have experienced or researched our special place in the world.”

The other night I was sitting and enjoying a night out at pizza (All you can eat, but that doesn’t mean I’m greedy) with a few friends when I saw quite a bizarre incident. The restaurant had put the cricket between the West Indies and Zimbabwe on the TV and every now and then I would glance at the screen (Had to be subtle as there were people around).

Sibanda was dismissed in freak fashion

Then it happened, Vusi Sibanda was on 95 and Kemar Roach came in to bowl. At first quick glance it seemed like Sibanda had played a really funny shot and been bowled, but his bat appeared to not be where it should have been (Half of it seemed like it was on the floor). I think I mutter something at that point as a few people looked at me, realized I was looking at the TV and then they looked at the TV.

It was confirmed by the TV replay and a few other people around the table. Sibanda’s bat had snapped in half. The ball not happy to just break his bat decided it would fly into his stumps, bowling him out. Sibanda looked quite shocked, as any person would be. Every professional has several bats in the change room so when you feel the bat giving up, you can change it (I think even Zimbabwean batsmen have a few bats, maybe not?).

Smith was denied a Runner, which may have helped SA win

The bit that really surprised me was when Chris Gayle, captain of the West Indies, told him to head to the pavilion. Now most people are probably not very aware of it but if a batsman is dismissed, the captain does have the authority to call him back, so long as he has not stepped over the boundary. Some people can remember Andrew Strauss being praised for his sportsmanship when he called a batsman back who was run out, possibly because Ryan Sidebottom got in his way (He then denied Smith a runner a 48 hours later).

The issue I am trying to address here is the issue of sportsmanship in professional sport. Sibanda was a few runs away from his hundred and was dismissed, not by a bad shot, but by a bad bat. Zimbabwe went on to win the game but everyone knows that if Sibanda was allowed to continue, the West Indies would have been played out the game. They have only won two of their last 13 games (Including their win on Sunday) so they were getting desperate to win. Strauss denied Smith a runner as that might have gotten South Africa past the finish line but Angelo Matthews was called back, probably as he was not considered a threat to England at the time.

I feel that as the game gets more money, the gentlemanly nature of the game and things like sportsmanship will start going faster and faster out the window. The better a team does the more money it makes. So why mess up the chance to make a fortune? Despite the fact that most of the West Indies players are already millionaires (In US dollars) courtesy of the Stanford Winner takes all against England, IPL, Stanford 20/20 and various other Twenty20 events. The Zimbabweans probably don’t have a fraction of that wealth, yet they challenged a team of millionaires as they play with passion and the love of the game.

Here is an interesting article I read about the West Indies performance and the money they make.

Mediaclub’s Bongani Nkosi reports that Joao Raposo - a Brazilian journalist - is so impressed with South Africa’s stadiums he’s concerned his home country won’t match up when it hosts the Fifa World Cup in 2014.

“In Brazil we’re concerned about the stadiums we will have,” Raposo said during a recent interview at Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg. “I think it will be difficult to compete with the stadiums that Africa has [built].”

Raposo, a producer at Bandeirantes TV in Sao Paulo, is one of 120 international and local journalists currently touring South Africa’s 10 host stadiums on a trip initiated by Fifa and the Local Organising Committee (LOC). It has been scheduled to coincide with celebrations marking 100 days remaining to the kick-off the 2010 Fifa World Cup in June.

Another journalist, Ghanaian Henry Asante Twum, is also taken aback by South Africa’s “impressive” stadiums. Twum, the head of sport at Ghana Television, had seen most of the host stadiums and is convinced the country will stage a memorable event in June.

“The World Cup in South Africa will be magnificent. I’m happy that Valcke has commended what South Africa has done to prepare,” Twum said. “I’m impressed with the stadiums I’ve seen.”

The hospitality industry also looks ready to welcome the world to Africa, Twum added. “I’ve seen some hotels here. I think the country is in good shape.”

By Dianne Bayley

Let’s face it, there little nicer than having a dog or cat greet you when you arrive home after a long day’s work. The cat, of course, won’t bound up and lick you all over like your dog will - rather, she’ll give you that practised “my human is home to feed me” look.

Those are the lucky ones. There are many, many dogs, cats and other animals in shelters all over the country that won’t be getting a human home after work today.

Now, not everyone can go out and save a puppy or a kitty. But there’s still plenty each of us can do to help out. The number of shelters in South Africa that refuse to put animals down is growing . . . which means the number of animals that need a little of your time, money and compassion is growing.

Yesterday some friends and I went up to the SAINTS - Barkingmad/DogtownSA book sale at Northriding Square - Bellairs Dr (Dros and Checkers centre). A couple of friends donate their time and help out there on the first and last Saturday of every month, and the rest of us go and support by buying books.

Now, this isn’t purely about being kind to animals . . . I have to own up here. I love books as much as I love my cat Pickle - and the books at this sale are PHENOMENAL. Yesterday I picked up a brand new copy of Shantaram for R60.00. I also got four other paperbacks for a total of R60.00. So, for less than the cost of ONE new book, I got FIVE.

The bonus is, of course, that the money goes towards helping all sorts of animals all over the country!

So, what can you do? Here’s how easy it is to help . . . Visit the Barking Mad website and see the number of animal charities that are supported. Lend your support to some of their sponsors, too - and there are many, in all kinds of businesses - and if you visit the site every day, just by clicking a single link, you’ll donate one bowl of food!

You could also take two minutes of your time to send the word “dog” by SMS to 38919 and donate R10.00 per SMS. Then there’s donations . . . books, old clothes, pet food - just about anything you no longer have any use for will come in handy. Take a trip up to the book sale and take some goods with you. Ask for Amy (SAINTs@mweb.co.za) / 011678 0846 or Viv 082 259 0905.

Now, this may seem like a shameless punt - and it is. I see friends of mine putting in so much time and effort to help, knowing that if they don’t do it, few will. I take my hat off to them. But that’s not going to feed any human-less animals . . . so, to help out from where I am, they make it easy. The SMS thing is my favourite - and so is buying (and donating) books.

Of course, then there’s the adopting of the babies (of all ages). A married couple I know have a hectic lifestyle and opted to adopt grown up babies, thus circumventing the “puppy training”. Their three dogs and three cats bring them endless joy - and I think “walk time” every day is actually “down time” for the humans, who look forward to it as much as the dogs do!

Then there’s one of my favourite families on the planet, who adopted Jessica when she was just bigger than a block of butter and found in a cardboard box on the side of the road. They recently went back to the animal home and found another puppy - also found on the side of the road in a box. Coincidence, or pulling at heart strings? You decide! But the little one - now five weeks old - is a beaut! Jessica adores her, and the yet-to-be-named baby already rules the roost. What a joy to see the two of them playing, knowing they have a safe home, all the food and water they need - and more love than you could shake a stick at!

If you have a spare ten bucks; some old books; want to buy some new books or can just pop a packet of dog or cat food in your shopping trolley this month, you’ll be doing SO much to help the little souls who can’t speak for themselves, and rely on people like Viv, Amy, Jackie, Jacqui, Erica and so many others to speak for them. Go on - be barking mad for a bit!

Home of the world-famous Ndebele artistic tradition, this province glories in creativity and feasts on its mysterious and glamorous past. When it comes to art, heritage and culture, Mpumalanga is generous in its offerings. With Mozambican and Swazi influences, ancient geology and artistic social traditions, and a rich contemporary arts scene, the province is always rewarding for culture vultures.

Ndebele culture

One of the things for which the province is most culturally famed is the artistic tradition of the Ndebele people. The Ndebele have a long artistic tradition, exemplified in their decorative house painting, beadwork and jewellery, as well as traditional dress and embroidery. The skill of the Ndebele has always resided in their ability to combine exterior sources of stimulation with traditional design concepts taken from their ancestors. And what better way to encounter the Ndebele traditions than with a tour through the cultural heartland? Check out www.mpumalanga.com

Shangaan cultural village

For an interesting insight into the lifestyle and traditions of the Shangaan, take a visit to Shangana Cultural Village, just outside White River. You can walk in the fields, check out the market under the great umbhaba trees and chat to the locals. You can also attend the Evening Festival which features lively dancing, byala drinking, drum beating and colourful stories. www.shangana.co.za

Arts and crafts

The area around White River is known for its arts and crafts, local culture and entertainment. The area’s idyllic scenery and lifestyle have lured many of the country’s leading artists here, most of whom open their studios to visitors. You can visit potters and painters, weavers, glassblowers, wood carvers, stained-glass artists and more. You can also visit the studios of rural artists, who use everything from sweet wrappers to plastic bags to create innovative African art - such as the scores of Ndebele women who have banded together to create funky beaded necklaces and condom pouches for export to New York and Tokyo’s fashion boutiques. www.whiteriver.co.za.

Casterbridge Shopping Centre in White River is home to several contemporary art galleries, a local brewery, an old-car museum and an Art Nouveau Cinema. Across the road is the White River Barnyard which has theatre and musical events.

The province’s finest paintings, sculpture, weavings and ceramics are on permanent show at the Houses of Legislature, near Nelspruit’s Riverside Mall.

Music

On the music scene, Mpumalanga offers you the chance to indulge in a variety of options: there are haunting a cappella choral gatherings, vibrant kwaito raves, smooth jazz clubs and hardcore rural rock events. Some of South Africa’s leading musicians live in Mpumalanga and regularly perform for their home crowds. www.lowveldliving.co.za

Local happenings

The little village of Dullstroom in the Highlands Meander region hosts an annual Festival of Art, Culture and Environment to showcase visual arts, sculpture, pottery, music, the culinary arts and issues of the environment. www.dullstroom.co.za Innibos in Nelspruit is becoming a major music and cultural annual festival, featuring local music, theatre, fringe events and more. www.innibos.co.za

Rural retail therapy

Take your designer sunglasses, high-street outfits and credit cards. The Graskop Hotel is one of Mpumalanga’s funkiest spots and has a gallery featuring the biggest private collection of contemporary African art in the country. We’re talking beaded chairs from Nigeria, pygmy beds from Cameroon, sculptures from the Ivory Coast, body masks from Tanzania, baskets from Zululand … sigh. Next door is Delagoa Arts & Trading which has just about everything you could ever want on the arts and crafts front - be it painted fishes, Mandela clocks, beaded ware, wire objets - or things you haven’t even thought of yet. Check out www.graskophotel.co.za

Museums and more

One of the province’s most interesting museums is the Lydenburg Museum at the Gustav Klingbiel Reserve on the outskirts of Lydenberg. It is home to the Lydenberg Heads, unique pottery masks made by a vanished people thousands of years ago, and believed to have served a ritual or religious purpose. Carbon-dated to around 500AD, the masks were excavated from a nearby site. There are seven of them: six human and one animal face, decorated with ritual scars, with slits for eyes and mouths, and topped with stylised hair patterns and embellished with small animals. The reserve here has been earmarked for Mpumalanga’s first astrological observatory. Check out www.lydenberg.co.za

The Barberton Museum in Barberton has a fascinating exhibition that goes from the Stone Age to the gold rush. It also has a section on Swazi culture, one on daisies and another on geology, explaining the formation of the world’s oldest rock formations, which are found in Barberton. Next door, the Umjindi Coffee Shop showcases gold jewellery work by local artists. www.barberton.co.za

In Barberton you can also visit a statue dedicated to Jock of the Bushveld. One of South Africa’s classic books is Sir Percy Fitzpatrick’s biography of his dog, Jock, told in Jock of the Bushveld. Fitzpatrick, an Irish transport rider who used to take supplies between Lydenberg, Barberton and Delagoa Bay, knew the Lowveld intimately. Jock, his terrier, was his hunting companion in the bush. The plucky dog developed his own hunting style, which was to try to trip the animals he was chasing, pull them down, and grab them by the snout while Fitzpatrick took aim and shot. Jock’s eventful life included adventures with baboons, buffalo, crocodile and kudu.

Most of Pilgrim’s Rest is a living monument to the gold-rush days, but the Alanglade Museum here is a particularly interesting example of life in Edwardian times. www.pilgrimsrest.co.za At the Sabie Forestry Museum, there is a replica of the local Dutch Reformed Church built out of 4 200 matches. www.sabie.co.za

On a different note altogether, the Goldfields Elephant Museum at Letaba Camp in the Kruger offers an amazing insight into these giant creatures. You can see replicas of the tusks of the Magnificent Seven - seven elephants in Kruger famous for the size of their tusks - and explore the history of human-jumbo relations. www.parks-sa.co.za
